Sandstone Ltd and Verve Properties Ltd have also recently acquired 2-12 Commercial Road, Bournemouth. The site is currently occupied by Debenhams and comprises an existing five storey purpose-built department store originating from around 1890. An application has recently been granted for the use of Class E to ensure the site can be used to plan and adapt the changing commercial needs of the town centre. An application is also awaiting determination for a number of enhancements and alterations to the existing building. The alterations will significantly enhance the wider setting of the streetscape and contribution the existing building makes to the character of Bournemouth town centre by removal of unsympathetic 20th Century additions and reinstatement of features that reflect the original Victorian/ Edwardian character of the building. The reforms are primarily aimed at creating vibrant, mixed use town centres by allowing businesses greater freedom to change to a broader range of compatible uses which communities expect to find on modern high streets, as well as more generally in town and city centres.
